Klintehamn, Sweden

Wasa was in May 2016 awarded a contract in the port of Klintehamn in Gotland, Sweden to dredge and re-use limestone from the fairway and harbour basin. The project was a joint venture between Klintehamn Harbour and Sjöfartsverket. For the project Wasa mobilised the BHD 18000 model dredger “Optimus” along with a landbased EX1200 Hitachi 120 ton excavator. The target depth varied from 6,0 to 7,3 meters depth. Wasa was also to build around 21 000 m2 of new land areas for the port to use as a basis to contruct new harbour areas and quay walls.

Optimus and the split-barges “Miika II” and “Dana II” mobilised from Rauma, Finland to Klintehamn in September 2016 and started working. The first stage was to remove the soft soils, unusable for building, and sail them to the reclamation area at sea. After this came the scope of dredging the extremely hard limestone (up to 45 MPa) located underneath the soft soils. These hard masses was taken to the harbour area where the EX1200 excavator re-used the material in building new land area for the harbour. During the project around 1000 barges were taken to the reclamation areas.

The project was finished in March of 2017.
