The Port of Kalundborg decided with a public tender in 2017 to implement the plans to enlarge its port area. The tender was divided into two parts: the deepening and the construction of new quay walls. Wasa Dredging emerged as the victor of the tender for the deepening of the harbour basin and in October 2017 the contract was signed. This was the first project for Wasa Dredging in Denmark.

In March 2018 the project started with the insurvey of the dredge and dumping areas after which the dredging started with the deployment of the backhoe dredger “Optimus”, split-hopper barge “Dana II” and the newly built self-propelled split-hopper barges “Boann” and “Sinann”.

Optimus started the works by dredging a trench at the location of the new quay wall, down to 15 meters below water level. The inner port basin and the turning circle of the new port is dredged to 15 meters below water level, the outer basin is dredged to 11 meters below water level. After the dredging was completed an outsurvey and a bar sweep check was successfully performed to ensure the new depth of the dredging areas. In total a volume of 900 000 m3 of medium to hard moraine clays was dredged, transported and dumped into the appointed reclamation area which was located at some 17 km from the site.

The work was completed in 13 weeks starting in March 2018 and handed over to the client in June 2018.
